Cold Spots

What is a cold spot?  What many refer to as “cold spots” are simply an area that suddenly feels cold when it in fact should not be.  There seems to be no logical reason for it. But, in the paranormal world it is believed that a spirit pulls energy from the area so that is can manifest itself.  If this is true then unexplained cold spots would mean spirits may be present.

Just yesterday, two women approached me at the Front Desk.  They both seemed quite excited and I knew there was a story forthcoming. Sure enough, they took a deep breath and began.  While they were in the back of the library, they felt a cold spot in an area where there had previously not been one. There was no vent or fan.  There was no logical reason for it.

As the women continued with the story they told of a strong feeling of a “little girl” with them.  One stated “I think she is still right here with me.”  I could tell by watching their reactions that they truly believed this was happening. I went to where they had felt the cold spot, but I found nothing. They were adamant that this was what had happened.

Little did they realize, I am not one to question their story.  Working where I do and having the experiences I have, I know odd things can happen. I too have felt cold spots and felt as though a small child was walking with me.  It is a very strange thing to have happen. I have had my name whispered in my right ear, I have seen shadows in the stacks, I have seen two full apparitions (someone else saw them at the same time as me), and I have heard many things that I had no idea what it was. I have worked at the library since 1992. I is amazing how many of these things have become “just part of my job”.  You might laugh, but it is true.

Here at the library we have heard pretty much everything. Many locals come to us and just want someone to listen.  We hear of spirits, ghosts, shadows, voices, noises, things moving, and on and on. No, we do not have books flying around the room.  Occasionally someone will say they did see a book fall or move.  On occasion shadows are seen and on really rare occasions a full apparition has been seen. Please remember, these are not daily occurrences.

Many people want an answer.  This is where we have issues.  We have ideas of what is happening, we have theories, but we do not have definitive answers.  As many of you know, those of us that do the Ghost Walks have tried to educate ourselves as best we can. We have contacted several experts and asked many questions. We can share with you what they have shared with us.  For more information than that, we always refer you to them, the experts. We try but we do not have all the answers.

If you have had an experience please report it to the Front Desk of send it to me at  We will do our best to help you and answer your questions.

  1. Do you always feel cold spot whenever a spirit is presented ? Or only, they want to manifest into a form? Jean

  2. Thank you for your comment.
We find it varies. It is our belief that cold spots can be felt when “spirits” are around. It is always a good idea to debunk any possible drafts in the area just in case.

  3. I have felt cold spots but not always. It makes it hard to investigate. Just when you think you know what to look for then something else shows itself.
