Many of you that have attended the regular Ghost Walks have seen Mary Conley, one of our Ghost Walk Crew. She is a Reiki healer locally. Many questions have come up during and after the “Walks” about the subject, so I have asked Mary to share what she knows.

What is Reiki? By Mary Conley

Reiki (ray-key) is a system of energy healing that is natural and non-invasive. The Reiki practitioner may place his/her hands on the client or simply hold them over the client’s body. Reiki can be sent to people over distances and over time. It is related to other types of energy healing and incorporates aspects of Chinese medicine and Qigong.

The term Reiki is derived from two Japanese words – rei which means universal and ki which means life force. Ki is the same as the Sanskrit word prana, the Chinese qi or chi, the Hebrew ruah, and the English word spirit.

Reiki is not a religion. Receiving or being attuned to Reiki does not entail any conversion or adoption of spiritual beliefs or practices from any religion. Reiki harmonizes with most spiritual belief systems that allow for the existence of energy work.

The first step in healing is to desire to be well and whole. Without the motivation to be well and the intention to act in our own behalf, we cannot become well. Reiki is a means to empowering us to become whole in all ways. Many people like to get regular hands-on Reiki treatments as a refreshing and relaxing treat for themselves, in the same way that they might get a massage, a facial, a guided meditation session, or a mud bath.

As a healing modality, Reiki can help alleviate physical, emotional, mental or spiritual suffering. When we speak of healing, physical health may be the first thing that comes to mind; however, the more accurate meaning of healing is wholeness. The practice of healing is that of becoming whole on all levels of being: mental, physical and spiritual. This is where Reiki works.

Reiki energy increases vitality and stamina, works throughout the body, on the mind, emotions, spiritual essence and aura. Reiki treatments release blocked energy and reduces stress, thus promoting relaxation. Reiki energy has an innate intelligence and goes wherever needed in the body and aura. It helps to cleanse the body of toxins, both energetic and physical, and over time can enhance stamina, intuition, meditation and spiritual evolution. Reiki also works on plants, animals and even machines. It can be used in Earth healing.

Reiki will not harm anyone because the underlying principle of Reiki energy is that it can do no harm and cannot be used for any harmful purpose. Specifically, Reiki treatments enhance the body’s natural ability to heal itself. When the mind, body and spirit become unbalanced, the result is illness. True wellness is achieved only by returning the entire being to harmony and balance with itself and also with the Earth and the Universe.
