Why Me?

I have asked myself this question so many times. Why have the spirits at the library chose me? Truth is…….I am not sure. I was told many years ago by a very well-known psychic Chip Coffee “Spirits choose those they feel are friendly. It like this. If you go into a room, there are friendly people on one side of the room and not friendly people in the other side. Which side would you go to?” This made total sense to me. I have always chosen to just remain open-minded.

When I first started working at the Sweetwater County Library as a substitute in September 1992, I had only had two paranormal things ever happen to me. Once after an uncle and cousin died, I saw a dark shape in the doorway of my bedroom. I wasn’t scared. Startled a bit at first, but there was no sense of real fear. I felt as if “they” were there to comfort me. I have a feeling who I think it was, but I have no proof. It lasted all night. I must have drifted off to sleep and when I woke, it was gone. It never happened again. The second was a slight premonition thing. Someone in the family was very ill. At that point, we had no idea how ill. Everyone was hopeful, but I somehow knew he would die. I was only seven years old but I remember it well.

My mom passed away in 2017. She was a special lady. Many times, in her life she saw dead loved ones and sometimes heard them. Once a close friend died suddenly. The night he died she said he came and stood at the foot of her bed. He told her to tell the family and his lady friend he was fine. They were not to worry. She saw him as clear as when he was alive. After his funeral she approached his son. She asked what did you put on his feet when he was buried and said “Was it tan slippers?” The son looked at her in shock. Yes, was all he could get out.

Two days before she became very bad and we had to take her to the hospital, in which she never returned, she shared something with me. She very simply said “I woke up last night and the house was full of people”. She gave me that look. I knew she meant “They are coming for me”. We knew she was very ill and was going to leave us soon. I had questions to ask her about it but never got the chance to find out more. I so wish I had. Mom always seemed to have these things in her life. She was a total believer.
Why did I share this personal story? I think it is important to show that not all things paranormal/spirits/ghost etc. are dark. I believe there are times our loved ones or even those we never knew, feel the need to reach out to us. I certainly do not have all the answers but I think we should trust our instincts with these things. I have a friend that believes that “anything” like this is totally evil and dark. We all are entitled to our opinion, but in my experience, this is not the case. There are things out there that I will not go near, but the library is not one of them.

During my time at the library, I never felt I or anyone around me was in danger from anything there. I think “our” spirits are just those persons that had been buried in the old cemetery and they, for whatever reason, feel they want to communicate with us. It is fascinating to get a feel for their personalities. Yes, some let us see a bit of themselves with the EVPS (electronic voice phenomenon) we have captured or photos that several patrons have shared. The Ghost Walk Crew and those that have helped with the Ghost Walks in the past have always felt privileged to be allowed to have contact with them.
