A blog about Technology in the Sweetwater County Library System
Yes, it is 2008. And we are just now rolling out MS Office 2007. However, a majority of our patrons haven’t had any training with the new office suite. Since the interface is dramatically different, I have been waiting to install it on our patron computers. Right now, I am in the process of loading the software on our staff machines. Once our staff is comfortable with the new software, I will install it on the patron computers.
The time frame for MS Office 2007 to be installed on the patron computers will be towards the end of the summer. The Library System will be involved in setting up a fiber optic infrastructure around that time as well, so that may change. I will keep the blog up to date on the status of the upgrade.
Have a great day!
The Rock Springs Library has replaced 4 of the circulation public computers with HP dc5700 series desktops. They also have 17″ LCD monitors as well. The computers are dual-core with 2GB of RAM with Windows XP Professional. They will be ready for the Vista upgrade to take place next year some time. As far as performance, these machines are about 4 times faster than the previous Dell Dimensions we had before.
The new computers also feature a built-in memory card reader for 5 different memory cards, 3 front USB ports, and front audio ports. They do not however, have floppy disk drives.
In case you haven’t been to the Rock Springs Library lately, here is a photo of two of them:

We have been running into road blocks on the new sound system for the Sweetwater County Library. The first problem was the weather. It prevented us from traveling to Green River, and our maintenance crew had to plow snow. The second problem involves some wiring issues and equipment placement.
I am currently busy getting some new computers ready for Rock Springs Library, and working on some problems with broken down computers throughout the system. I am also heavily involved with a fiber optic project at the moment.
That’s the update for now. I know many of our staff are excited to get it going. Things are best done right rather than thrown together, and that is my philosophy as well. I will continue to update everyone, and I hope everyone has a great Valentines Day!
*EDIT: The system install has been postponed for another week.. Plowing snow took over the installation day. :)
A new audio/visual system will be installed at the Sweetwater County Library in Green River within the next couple of weeks. It will feature the same sound system as White Mountain Library, the Onkyo THX 7.1 setup. The projector will be similar to the one at WML. The new system will allow the librarian’s and the public to play movies and make presentations much easier than in the past.
More information will be posted when the system is installed.
Here’s a picture to fuel the anticipation
Enjoy!
The White Mountain Library now has a new audio/video system in the large meeting room. The projector is brighter, the speakers are louder and clearer sounding, and the whole system in permanently installed. The sound system is an Onkyo 7.1 THX home theater setup, and the projector is an Acer professional series with a rating of 3000 lumens!
To kick off the new system, the White Mountain Library will be hosting a movie marathon of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies on December 6th. The first movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl will be played at 12pm, Dead Man’s Chest at 3pm, and At World’s End at 6pm.

Hope to see you there!
Well, the Fall LAN Parties are now over. They were all a huge success! Thanks to everyone who came to play games, setup tournaments, etc. The next LAN Parties will be starting in January. See you then!
Hello everyone! Our web server is now running the latest version of PHP 5. I upgraded it mainly because our admin interface for blogging was EXTREMELY slow. It is much faster now, and now our librarians can blog without stress. Happy librarians=more blogging!
Anyway, this blog is more about the technology to our patrons. I have noticed a slight speed increase in our overall website as well. If you notice anything different, out of place, or pages that are slower, please let me know. So far, everything seems to be running great!
Have a great day!
… was a success! Friday night brought in 22 people, while Saturday night brought in over 45. Many different games were played each night including the newly released Halo 3. FEAR, Warcraft 3, Heavenly Sword, Guitar Hero, and Dance Dance Revolution were also big hits.
Thanks to everyone that helped with setup, clean up, and pitching in for food and soda. It was fun, and we hope to see you there on October 12th and 13th!
