WML and SCL now have “Scan to Email”

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:25 pm by David Halter

The White Mountain Library in Rock Springs and the Sweetwater County Library in Green River have the ability to scan to your email. The copy machines at each location have been setup with this feature. Instead of faxing a document, why not email it? Scanning is done in full color and is sent as a PDF file.

Ask a librarian about how to scan a document to an email address.

WiFi Now Available in RSL Meeting Rooms

Posted in IT News at 11:05 am by David Halter

The WiFi can now be accessed in the down stairs meeting rooms at the Rock Springs Library. When we switched over to the new wireless system, the signal was no longer strong enough to work in the meeting rooms. Now, and additional access point has been installed.

WML is now Gigabit/UPnP

Posted in IT News at 11:18 am by David Halter

White Mountain Library now has a fully gigabit infrastructure. This means there are no bottlenecks in the network that would slow down the Internet or other internal network operations. Nearly every computer in the building can communicate with each other or access websites at full speed and not be slowed down. This will allow the network to grow and handle new technologies for several years to come.

RSL and SCL will be receiving the same upgrade before the end of the year.

WML also has UPnP routing on the patron network. UPnP will be useful for the monthly LAN parties and the game room at WML. Games could not be hosted on the Internet due to firewall constraints and lack of UPnP. UPnP stands for Universal Plug and Play. It is a protocol that games use to tell the router how to handle incoming connections for hosting online games. Most newer multiplayer games and game consoles support the feature. No longer will the XBox Live connection test fail because of the lack of UPnP.

More information will be posted in the future when other network upgrades/changes occur. Have a wonderful day!

WiFi Network Complete

Posted in IT News at 3:34 pm by David Halter

The new public WiFi network has been completed. The three main libraries now have authenticated wireless access. When a patron accesses the network with their own laptops, they will be asked to create an account on the system. Creating an account is free and simple. A patron only needs to create a username and password, and provide an email address for account activation. After the account has been created, the email address is only used to activate the account and will no longer be needed.

The purpose for the new wireless network is to collect statistics on the number of users that access our public Internet. We use this information to see where technology is being used, and how we can make it better in the future.

New Public WiFi System

Posted in IT News at 3:08 pm by David Halter

A new WiFi network is being installed at the three main libraries. Currently, White Mountain Library has the new system. The new system requires a user to register an account on our network.

We are going to this new system so that we may collect statistics on wireless users. We do not store any private information, and email addresses are only used for validation purposes.

We are also replacing the access points at each building for better coverage. Rock Springs Library will go from two access points to one centrally located access point. This will help with the wireless leaking outside of the building.

Once the system is fully installed, an update will be posted on this blog. Have a great day!

Fiber Optic Network/Internet Upgrade is Finished!

Posted in IT News at 8:04 pm by David Halter

Hello everyone! Our new Fiber-Optic Network and Internet has been installed and is fully operational. A three locations have access to 15Mbps Internet access. We are directly connected to the Internet backbone in Salt Lake City. This means we have very little latency (response time) to websites around the world.

White Mountain Library is experiencing the biggest improvement. The previous connection was 1Mbps DSL. On average, the speeds have been around 20 times faster for WML.

Also, our three main locations are inter-connected with Fiber Optics giving us 1000Mbps of bandwidth. This will help staff with file-sharing, video conferencing, server location flexibility, and phone quality.

Anyway, enjoy the new super-fast connection! :)
