The spirit of spoken word is definitely present at the Poetry Jams hosted at the Sweetwater County Library. Wordsmiths are needed to perform at the first fall Poetry Jam Friday, February 15 at 7 p.m. at the Sweetwater County Library. Whether people prefer to sing or speak, either talent is welcome.
The Poetry Jams provide an opportunity for Sweetwater County poets and musicians to perform their original work to an audience - and audiences the chance to be entertained by short bursts of contemporary poetry and music.
“In the past, one of the main roles of libraries was to be a place where one can obtain knowledge. Now the role of libraries is evolving to be cultural centers within the community. The Poetry Jams at the library provide people with a wonderful opportunity to perpetuate culture in our community,” says Ellie Davis, Youth Services Manager at the Sweetwater County Library. “For me culture is literature, poetry, music, art, etc… in any given time frame. Culture is created when we engage in whatever artist endeavors that calls to us, then we are adding to the creation of culture in our own era.”
Davis requests that “all musicians and poets please arrive early so participants can get the line up ‘figured out’ and set up the show.” The Poetry Jam starts at 7 p.m. The Poetry Jam includes three rounds of poetry, intermission with refreshments, and music with each musician sharing a maximum of three songs.
Poetry Jams provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for local poets, musicians, and performers. The pieces performed at the Jams are not censored and are geared for audiences high school aged and up, according to organizers.
