Posted on November 9, 2012 by Brittany Wells

The 20th annual “Love of Reading” celebration kicks off Monday, November 12 through Friday, November 16 with Clifford the Big Red Dog and Emily Elizabeth will be visiting classrooms. They will visit children in grades kindergarten through second grade in both school districts during this week. Other Love of Reading activities during the week include library programs, book giveaways, classroom activities, readers in the classrooms, and more.

During the week, three “Read Ins” are scheduled in Green River and Rock Springs with Clifford, book giveaways, crafts, treats, and entertainment. White Mountain Library's program is Tuesday Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The Rock Springs Library's program is Wednesday Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. The Sweetwater County Library’s program is on Thursday Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. Librarians invite parents to bring their children and take part in a fun evening.

The White Mountain Library’s “Read-In” on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. will feature stories, refreshments and an appearance from Clifford. The Love of Reading celebration continues through the week with after school crafts. Tuesday, Nov. 13 through Wednesday, Nov. 14 children are invited to make crafts after school from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the White Mountain Library.

The Rock Springs Library’s “Read-In” is Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. and Anne Parady, Head of Youth Services, said “Participants should plan on an hour of fun! This celebration will include a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog, book give a ways, and, and various other entertainments. Parents are welcome to bring a camera to take a picture of their children with Clifford.”

In Green River, besides being entertained by Clifford and Emily Elizabeth on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m., librarians will read stories and have drawings for new books. Children will make Clifford floppy ears, have their faces painted with Clifford noses and whiskers, and the little “Clifford” puppies will get a bag of “kibbles” to eat.

Introducing children to the joy of books and keeping them reading is the goal of “Love of Reading Week.” “Love of Reading Week” is coordinated and promoted by the Love of Reading Committee, a collaboration of teachers and librarians from School Districts No. 1 and 2, and Youth Services Librarians from the Sweetwater County Library System. A grant from the Sweetwater Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) funds “Love of Reading Week” activities including the new books given away at library programs and publicity.

Planning for Love of Reading as a celebration was initiated by Rick Kempa, a college instructor at Western, in the fall of 1993. He met with then Library Director Helen Higby to propose the event to instill and reinforce the love of reading in children. A committee of teachers and librarians was formed and the celebration took off. It was first held in February of 1994 and 1995 before being moved to November where it has continued to the present. When Sweetwater BOCES took on Love of Reading on as a special project in 1995, the committee was able to broaden the event to bring in reading specialists, and to fund book giveaways, and publicity with a grant from Sweetwater BOCES.

“Love of Reading Week” is sponsored by Sweetwater BOCES and the Sweetwater County Library System. To learn more about Love of Reading week and other library sponsored programs and services visit any Sweetwater County Library System location, visit the Library System on-line at or at Facebook at
