Children will make Clifford floppy ears, have their faces painted with Clifford noses and whiskers, and the little “Clifford” puppies will get a bag of “kibbles” to eat.
Introducing children to the joy of books and keeping them reading is the goal of “Love of Reading Week.” “Love of Reading Week” is coordinated and promoted by the Love of Reading Committee, a collaboration of teachers and librarians from School Districts No. 1 and 2, and Youth Services Librarians from the Sweetwater County Library System. A grant from the Sweetwater Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) funds “Love of Reading Week” activities including the new books given away at library programs and publicity.
Planning for Love of Reading as a celebration was initiated by Rick Kempa, a college instructor at Western, in the fall of 1993. He met with then Library Director Helen Higby to propose the event to instill and reinforce the love of reading in children. A committee of teachers and librarians was formed and the celebration took off. It was first held in February of 1994 and 1995 before being moved to November where it has continued to the present. When Sweetwater BOCES took on Love of Reading on as a special project in 1995, the committee was able to broaden the event to bring in reading specialists, and to fund book giveaways, and publicity with a grant from Sweetwater BOCES.
“Love of Reading Week” is sponsored by Sweetwater BOCES and the Sweetwater County Library System.
